Unissula Law Students Examine Carbon Trading as an Environmental Law Instrument in Malaysia

The Bachelor of Law (S1 Ilmu Hukum) Study Programme of Universitas Islam Sultan Agung (Unissula) Semarang has formally opened its International Field Study (KKL) programme in Malaysia. Held in the heart of Kuala Lumpur from 24 to 26 January 2026, the programme aims to broaden the global perspective of future legal practitioners.

The first day, Saturday 24 January 2026, culminated in an international law seminar titled “Future of Environmental Law: Between Biology and Global Trade”, bringing together international legal practitioners and academics to examine environmental issues now at the centre of global attention.

The first session was delivered by Adv. Muna Rime, a lawyer specialising in corporate law and international trade. She presented the mechanics of carbon trading and the legal regulation of rare earth elements.

“Law students must be ready for the green economy era. Understanding carbon regulation is no longer optional — it is a requirement in the global market,” she told the hundreds of students present.

The second session was led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Tjahjono, M.Mar E., who examined environmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective, analysing the impact of pollution from a biological standpoint and its relationship with law enforcement in Indonesia and across ASEAN.

The Head of the Study Programme, Dr. Muhammad Ngazis, S.H., M.H., welcomed the event, stressing that international exposure is essential for sharpening students' awareness of cross-border legal issues.

“We want Unissula graduates to be strong not only at home, but also to understand how law works internationally — especially on environmental issues, which are a global concern today,” he said.

Following the seminar, the field study continued on 25–26 January 2026 with visits to legal institutions in Malaysia and a comparative study of the local legal culture.

The programme is expected to strengthen academic cooperation between Unissula and Malaysian institutions and to give students valuable experience in building professional networks across Southeast Asia.
